![]() Set in early 60’s America, Lessons in Chemistry is an almost-fairy-tale. ![]() This highly enjoyable novel is – give or take some anguish - such an uplifting read that I forgot my crossness about those quotes. ![]() What a pleasure! Almost immediately, I was swept away by the confident voice and dark wit of the writing. However, as the novel was an important birthday gift, I sighed and opened up the pages. Nigella Lawson, Nina Stebbe, Rachel Joyce. There are also quantities of – to me - annoying quotes. For a start, the dust jacket image offers half a woman, in a dated high-heeled stance, carrying a colour television showing an American cookery programme. ![]() She posts on The History Girls, on An Awfully Big Blog Adventure and can be found on Twitter in Chemistrydid not look like a book I’d choose. I always think this about watching Star Wars – I came to Star Wars very late and I always knew that. Gayle: But it’s not like: if you read a trashy crime novel and you know whodunnit, there’s no reason to read it. Having edited the event podcast, and then read the book afterwards, I know I approached it in a completely different way than I might have done. ![]() Rachael: ‘Spoilers’ was the word Deborah used at the event. Gayle: Maybe ‘spoilers’ is the wrong word, but. which is interesting, because you wouldn’t necessarily think of good, really interesting literary fiction as being really plotty and spoiler-y? I’m reading it in a completely different way now.Ĭlaire. Gayle: Re-reading it, there are definitely spoilers. Gayle: I just don’t know what we’re going to say without spoilers! We at the Bookshop have long been Levy devotees, so couldn’t pass up the chance to reconvene our (very) occasional Booksellers’ Round Table to discuss this haunting, fragmentary, dreamlike work about a beautiful man with a mysterious past – and present (even though a couple of us still hadn’t actually finished reading it). Our Author of the Month for September is novelist, essayist and memoirist Deborah Levy, whose latest novel The Man Who Saw Everything was longlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the second prequel of Dorothy Must Die, we get a little insight on Jellia, the head-maid for the first book and life in Oz after Dorothy becomes its ruler. They add so much depth the the world and the characters. I would love it if she would do my nails! Sercets are unveiled and I wonder what part might take in the main story line.Īll three novellas of the 'Dorothy Must Die' Stories from Volume 1 are really good. And we get a better sample of Jellia's ability with Nail Art. Overall an interesting side is shown of certain characters. Yet also confused me on the timelines a bit. One of the servants working for Glinda shocked me. On the surface, Glinda just wants a maid but her intentions are much darker in how to use Jellia. And to that I just want to say "EWW!" Apparently Glinda does not understand that there is a concept for too much pink. Glinda sees something special about Jellia so takes her for a short time to help in her palace. But I feel the part she did play was more vital than we knew. It also had me wishing she played a larger role. Although this story dies give us greater insight into who what role she really plays in the story. ![]() This book has me feeling really bad for Jellia, especially after what happens to her in Dorothy Must Die. Spoilers ahead if you have not read the first book yet. ![]() If you have not read Dorothy Must Die, I highly suggest reading that before this book. ![]() Friend of Ozma, head servant for Dorothy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lim also connected with yung pueblo's themes of discovering the self and authenticity, she says, as it relates to how she aims to help individuals build a sense of happiness within themselves and, by extension, through their work.
